Dr. Mùróng Wèi has been a doctor for almost 30 years. She uses surgery when patients need it. She helps people through chemotherapy. She sends patients to other doctors when she must. She trusts modern medicine. But for sleep problems, she often uses something very simple: a small seed stuck on the ear.
I use what works. For many people who cannot sleep, ear seeds work.
Here is how it works. Tiny seeds from a plant called Vaccaria are stuck on the ear with tape. The most common spot is called Shenmen. Patients keep the seeds on for three to five days. They press the seeds a few times each day, especially at night.
Old Chinese medicine says the ear is like a map of the whole body. Pressing the right spot can help sleep. Dr. Mùróng does not ask patients to believe this idea. She only asks them to try it and see.
In her clinic, many patients sleep better. People who woke up many times at night often say they fall asleep faster. They stay asleep longer. They feel more rested in the morning.
Some tell me it is the first good sleep they have had in years without a pill. I hear this often.
Why It Still Sits on the Margins
Studies back this up. One big review in 2020 looked at 18 tests with more than 1,600 patients. It showed that ear seeds helped people sleep better. Other tests also found better sleep and fewer wake-ups at night. The seeds are cheap. They do not hurt. Side effects are rare. Sometimes the tape makes the skin a little red.
Dr. Mùróng says the method is not used more for a simple reason.
No one owns a patent on a seed. No drug company makes money when a person presses a point on their ear instead of taking another sleeping pill. That is why many doctors still ignore it.
She still offers ear seeds early for sleep trouble. The steps are easy. No special tools. No prescription. Just stick on the seed, press it, and try to sleep. For many of her patients, this is enough.
Medicine has strong tools. But we should not ignore a tool that is safe, cheap, and helps people sleep. My patients press a seed on their ear at night. Many sleep better. I see this every week. That is why I keep using it.
